The Louvre

Apparently my blog has been recognized as a "Blog of Note" on the Blogger homepage, which is pretty cool. Welcome, new readers! I'm going to have to ask you all to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement about Sheldon's meat pie chain idea, though.

Yesterday Nick and I went to the Louvre. It's...well, it's big. It's not as pleasant and classy a museum experience as, say, the Met (the art museum closest to my heart), but it pretty clearly dominates the Met on every other score. It's bigger, more famous, more crowded, the buildings are more historically significant, and it's full of a lot more ridiculously important artifacts. I'm not sure the Mona Lisa even belongs on their Top Five list. They have Hammurabi's Code there! Like, THE Hammurabi's Code, the actual rock on which "eye for an eye" was first written down! I got pretty nerdily excited when we saw it, especially since when I was a 6th grade history teacher I made my students do Hammurabi's Code-related crayon art. By the way, does anyone know how the Louvre got their hands on it? They don't explain in any of their english-language informational material, which makes me suspect some nefarious act of colonial pillaging. Napoleon Bonaparte, I'm looking in your direction!

Another unexpected higlight of the Louvre was watching people take pictures of the Mona Lisa. There are approximately 17 huge signs en route to the painting stating in multiple languages that photographs are NOT ALLOWED. Still, almost everyone who goes tries to get a snapshot. You can see that they know it's not allowed, because they look guilty and try to do it as sneakily as possible. The guards are apparently not empowered to take people's cameras away for breaking the rules, so they're left with no option but impotently glaring at the tourists, and, occasionally, ruining someone's picture by waving their hands in front of the camera. Nick pointed the spectacle out to me, and we spent 10 minutes standing there, watching and snickering.

I love it! It's inevitable that people will try and be sneaky and do such things, I watch them touch paintings in museums myself (oh, and I'm also a Met lover).

Congrats on the blog of note!

Yes: Apparently, Hamurabi stole some old records from the Louvre, and forking-over the stone seemed like an appropriate punishment.

I must confess I was once one of those shameful Mona-Lisa-snapshot-takers. :o

Great adventure travel blog. I love to travel, to figure out new places, revisit favorites, and write about the little adventures that make great memories. Sounds like you're having fun.

One of my favorite Parisian museums is Musée de l'Orangerie. A bit less hectic than the Louvre.

I saw the Mona Lisa back in 1999. Back then cell phone cameras weren't as common. I went to Italy in 2004. In Florence, there are signs all around not to take the picture of statue of David. With so many cell phone cameras it was impossible to enforce. Only time I broke a no picture rule was to take a picture of the Sistine Chapel ceiling.

You sound like you're having a great time in your travels. Seeing the Mona Lisa must have been very interesting. I've never been lucky enough to see any famous artwork in person.

I felt like I was right there with you. I am almost ashamed to admit that I would have been one of those people trying to take advantage of the impotency of the security guards. ;-) I can't resist a challenge! I eagerly await your next post.

I spent a summer studying in Paris and I came to learn that the Mona Lisa on display is not the original!! The original is safe and hidden . . . thus sneaky photo takers are waisting their sneak energy. of course that was 9 years ago . . . perhaps that has changed.

i've also jump aboard anna abroad thanks to blogs of note.

love your blog and those photos. they too remind me of my travels to Europe - though i'm sure we were allowed to take photos of the Mona Lisa when i first visited in '99. hmmm, perhaps i was just a sneaky 15 year old.

that's it, enjoy the rest of your trip.

ooo, make sure you visit Sainte-Chapelle on the Ile de la Cité in Paris. mind-blowing.

When i went to Louvre i wanted do much to make a photo of Mona Lisa, nut i felt guilty in advance, so i didn't.

What a pity, now i'm thinking....:-(

I was in Paris last summer, Anna! My picture with the Mona Lisa is blurry at best :)

For some reason, it seems like it should be ok with no flash with today's digital cameras, but that could be me having little class.

At least the guards in the Louvre have some power compared to those in the Sistine Chapel.

I am so jealous of you...

You have to see the musee d'Orsay.

It will steal your heart and make you love art forever. It is my favorite art museum in the world....

Like most people, the Mona Lisa was a top priority for me when I first visited the Louvre. But in my opinion nothing compares to the Winged Victory of Samothrace - I've lost count of how many times I've been to the museum just to look at it one more time!
Great posts, keep up the good work!
Cheers from Brazil.
